How To Find Your Home Decor Style: Beginner's Guide

Figuring out what your decorating style is can seem daunting, but even beginners can design a space that makes them feel inspired and expresses their personality. Creating a unique home decor design style doesn’t mean you have to be wealthy or particularly creative, either. It’s something that can be built and curated over time, and we’re going to help you do just that with these tips on how to find your decor style and what types of decorating style trends are out there to explore.

Ready to make your home true to you? Let’s go!

5 Ways To Find Your Home Decor Style: Beginner’s Guide

1. Understand what you want/need from your space

Style isn’t everything. At its very core, your space should functionally serve you and your family’s needs. For instance, if you have young children, you may not want to go with an all-white palette, minimalist furniture with little storage, and sculptural furniture. Knowing what will benefit you will guide you in the direction to go. Also, think about how you want to feel in your space. Do you want to feel creatively inspired, relaxed, or maybe cheerful? Let that be a guiding measure, too.

2. Take an online decor style quiz

There are plenty of online quizzes out there that can help you narrow down your style. This one from New York-based interior designer Christina Cleveland is quick but thorough. It shows you a variety of interiors and decorative pieces to choose what you like best as well as asks you questions about what you want from your home and how you want guests to feel when they visit. It also provide tips on how to build the decor style that the quiz says is most true to you.

3. Get inspiration from magazines & Pinterest

There are plenty of home decor and home design magazines such as Elle Decor and HouseBeautiful, and each issue showcases beautiful interiors of all types. Grab a few and bookmark which images speak to you. You can even tear pages out and create a mood board to get a better idea of what you like. More of a digital person? There’s so much interior decor inspiration on Pinterest, and — better yet — you can create your own virtual mood boards there.

4. Take a look at your wardrobe

What you wear says a lot about what you like and what you’re naturally drawn to. Take a look at your wardrobe to see if you notice any overarching themes. Are your clothes primarily shades of tans, blacks, and whites? Perhaps you’d enjoy a more neutral decor style. Are you drawn to bright colors and bold patterns? Then maximalism may be more of a way to go.

5. Take stock of what you currently have

Take a look around your home to see what decor you currently have. Chances are there are some running themes or similarities in some of the pieces. Use this as an inspirational guide.
